May motor vehicle sales up 9%

Sales by VAMA members higher than in April and unchanged year-on-year.

Sales of motor vehicles by members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) reached 23,065 units in May, up 9 per cent against April and virtually identical to May 2017, according to a recent report from the Association.

Passenger car sales were 14,892 units, 13 per cent higher than in April and bringing year-to-date sales to 15,397, 6 per cent higher year-on-year.

Commercial vehicle sales totaled 6,853 in May, down 8 per cent against April, while year-to-date sales were 6,890, down 19 per cent year-on-year. Special purpose vehicle sales declined 45 per cent against April, with 629 units sold, while the year-to-date figure was 778, down 36 per cent year-on-year.

The number of imported completely-built-up (CBU) vehicles in May totaled 87,426, up 12 per cent against April and bringing the year-to-date figure to 19,467, up 8 per cent year-on-year.

Completely-knocked-down (CKD) vehicle sales in May were 3,598, 9 per cent higher than in April. Year-to-date sales were 16,320, up 12 per cent year-on-year.

Thaco retained its position at the top of the market with its wide range of vehicles, selling 42,438 units in May. The gap between Thaco and the runner-up, Toyota Motor Vietnam (TMV), with 21,482 sales, was substantial.

TMV’s passenger car sales stood at 4,752 units in April (excluding the Lexus and imported models), down 8 per cent year-on-year. Sales of CKD models, however, including the Vios, Innova, Camry and Corolla Altis, rose 45 per cent year-on-year, expressing TMV’s efforts to promote local assembly and contributing to the sustainable development of the country’s auto industry. CKD models such as the Vios, Innova, and Corolla Altis again ranked highly on the list of best-sellers in May.
