Sustainability is business, and business is sustainability - that’s the business philosophy everyone at AkzoNobel keeps in mind and it comes as no surprise that sustainability sits proudly at the heart of everything they do.

A paint company might previously have reminded people of factories and chemicals. With a focus on sustainability, however, AkzoNobel changed such thinking. Now the word conjures up images of beautiful colors on beautiful houses and beautiful lives as well. This comes from a major effort in not only innovating products to a higher level of sustainability but also conducting a range of activities oriented towards the sustainable development of the local community where AkzoNobel has a presence.

Sustainable protection for houses …

In Vietnam, AkzoNobel’s is renowned as the leading global paint and coatings manufacturer offering a one-stop solution for all coating needs in the construction industry. The company has the advantage of a global presence and technological know-how, with innovations and research done at the global and regional scale and sent to different parts of the world, including Vietnam. AkzoNobel provides world-class local services, consistent and reliable quality (with a 30-year warranty on products), and solutions for customers around the country.

It can also optimize various local laboratories to better suit local needs. Coupled with expert knowledge in setting up factories, manufacturing, quality control, and consumer insight as well as global sourcing of raw materials and economies of scale, AkzoNobel can also offer the best products at affordable prices.

“Delivering more with less is our business credo,” said Ms. Pamela Phua, General Director of AkzoNobel Vietnam. “AkzoNobel has made serious investments over the years in research and development, 90 per cent of which went to developing sustainable and environmentally-friendly products that meet customer demand. We also have teams of scientists who work closely with customers around the world to develop sustainable solutions that meet the challenges we face on a daily basis.”

In the latest move, AkzoNobel recently introduced its new Dulux Professional coating solutions, which are designed to meet the needs of professionals in various fields, such as entertainment, healthcare, commercial, education, and civil. These are green and environmentally-sustainable products, which are of paramount importance in developing a sustainable and smart Vietnam.

… and lives

Five years ago, travelers were coming to Ly Son Island in central Quang Ngai province because of its wilderness, which had also resulted in its people being quite poor. Now, though, they come to see something different: a painted street.
Completed in the summer of 2018 by 40 volunteer students, 3D frescoes lighten up a new street to the sea. Colorful pictures of the street have attracted more tourists to the island, helping local people improve their livelihoods. A growing tourism industry may also help reduce pressure on near-shore fisheries and other unsustainable marine exploitation.

These benefits have been proven by other programs in Canh Duong fishing village in central Quang Binh province two years ago and at Dai Lanh Lighthouse in south-central Phu Yen province last year. After being repainted with premium Dulux Weathershield, the lighthouse has now become an attractive tourist destination, especially for young travelers. The coating also helps maintain the long-lasting beauty of this famous piece of Vietnamese architecture by protecting it against the extreme oceanic climate.

AkzoNobel also has its One Community Day - “AkzoNobel Sharing Love”, with volunteers and 60,000 liters of paint giving a new look to schools. Accompanying Green Summer in repainting and drawing paintings on walls to give a facelift to 60 city alleys and old apartment buildings with more than 3,000 liters of paint is another example of its efforts.

Sustainable future

Given such efforts, AkzoNobel was been honored many times as one of top companies in sustainability. In 2018, it took pride in being in the Top 100 Sustainable Businesses in Vietnam for the second year in a row and also picked up a Golden Dragon Awards for the fifth consecutive year.

During March and April 2019, AkzoNobel is holding international seminars with the theme “Urban Heritage Preservation - A Key to Community Development” in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The seminars will gather together heritage experts who will share their knowledge and experience in protecting heritage and discuss identifying the path towards a sustainable future for Vietnam’s heritage sites. Dulux Professional, a brand of AkzoNobel, is to introduce smart and innovative technologies and solutions to help protect symbolic structures that have borne witness to the country’s history.

In discussing the next sustainable steps in Vietnam, Ms. Phua said that AkzoNobel has conducted long-term and sustainable investment in the market. It has cooperated closely with customers, suppliers, and employees to do more with less, thus creating better products and services with fewer resources and a smaller energy footprint. Vietnam, like other Asia-Pacific countries, has a very high growth rate and so continues to be an area of focus, with Vietnam as a prime example.
Working with the Vietnam Environmental Association is another way it helps to set up a green standard for paint products in Vietnam as well as offering high-quality and eco-premium products to the market. In terms of manufacturing, it focuses on the continuous improvement of processes and practices to reduce solid waste and reduce the consumption of energy and other resources.

Regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR), Ms. Phua said that long-term CSR is not just about making the company satisfied and not just about regular PR, charity, or sponsorship programs. AkzoNobel sees CSR as requiring major attention and a long-term commitment to the interests of the company and the benefits of local society in the context of global integration. Thus, AkzoNobel will invest in thoughtful planning, the building of trust, and the implementation of internal and external community activities.
